On the 18th of October in 1881, a French priest, Julien Gouyet, came across a small stone building on a mountain which overlooked the Aegean Sea and ruins of ancient Ephesus in Turkey. He claimed it was the house where the Virgin Mary had lived the final years of her life.
The House of the Virgin Mary is the place where Mary had possibly spent her last days. She also may have come in the area with Saint John, who spent many years in the area to spread Christianity. A lot of people preferred this remote area, rather than living in a crowded location.
The site is visited not just by Christians, but by Muslims too. Pilgrims drink from a spring under the house, as it is said to have healing properties. A liturgy is held at Mary's house every year on the 15th of August to celebrate the Assumption of Mary.
